Martinique: logistics and trade
French overseas department / regional Caribbean hub
Martinique (ISO code: MQ) is an island in the eastern Caribbean and part of the Lesser Antilles. Politically it is a French overseas department and region, fully integrated into the European Union. The climate is tropical with year-round warm temperatures and a rainy and hurricane season from June to November. The economy is shaped by tourism, services and the agricultural production of bananas, sugar cane and rum. Its logistical importance lies mainly in regional sea and air links within the Caribbean and the connection to mainland France. In foreign trade Martinique is strongly import-oriented, especially for industrial goods, energy, food and consumer products, while exports are largely limited to agricultural goods and processed foods. Due to its island location Martinique has only a limited transit function but serves as a regional supply and transhipment point. The currency is the euro.
